Full-Time Uchideshi

Accelerated Apprentice Training Program in Newport Beach, California

uchi deshi program at AikidoThroughout history, committed disciples of an art have resided for a time within the actual training quarters or temple. Life is lived that is focused on discipline, ceaseless training, and service to others. Through forging of the body and spirit, these “uchideshi” – inside students seek to develop the true strength and wisdom. Though it has never been an easy life, the rewards to the committed program seeker is great. The uchi deshi tradition has been continued strongly in some dojos in Aikido. Sugano Shihan was the uchi deshi to the founder of Aikido and at Newport Beach Aikido, we are very fortunate to have Sensei Pennewaert who was Sugano Shihan’s uchi deshi for over 25 years.
What emerges from the dedicated uchi deshi is a new person, like a brilliant sharp sword emerging from rough iron through the action of hammer and fire. The uchi deshi learns to see this very body and mind, moment ot moment, as the true dojo. Life in this way becomes shugyo: the deepest possible physical and spiritual training.

The Aikikai Shin Do Kan Dojo is now accepting applications for its accelerated, live-in apprentice program in traditional Aikido. Modeled on the uchi deshi program at the Hombu Dojo in Japan, the Newport Beach program features such benefits as:
