It is said that Aikido is like a serene mountain lake, reflecting wisdom and the fullness of spiritual energy, and that our heart, mind, body and spirit vertically unite heaven and earth.

Each year, Newport Beach Aikikai hosts an annual summer camp, nestled in the majestic San Bernardino Mountains near Lake Arrowhead, surrounded by 2,000 acres of protected national forests, lakes, and abundant wildlife. This is where we will dedicate a special weekend of aikido practice in loving memory of the late Sugano Seichii Shihan. In addition, each summer camp features a special guest sensei to lead in our aikido practice.

We are proud to continue this tradition at the dojo. This year, G. Pennewaert Shihan will be the chief instructor at the Sugano Shihan Summer Camp. We invite you to join us and look forward to seeing you on the mat!

USAF PRESIDENT, 8TH DAN SHIHAN

As Chief instructor of the New York Aikikai, Yamada Shihan is the President of the United States Aikido Federation and is a direct student of the founder of Aikido, O’ Sensei.

SEIICHI SUGANO SHIHAN

8TH DAN SHIHAN

Sugano Shihan studied as uchi deshi under O’ Sensei since 1957 and continued to spread the knowledge of aikido to Australia and then onwards to Europe, Belgium where he first Sensei Pennewaert.

MIYAMOTO TSURUZO SHIHAN

7TH DAN SHIHAN

As the invited guest to the upcoming 5th Annual Sugano Shihan Summer Camp, Sensei Miyamoto 7th Dan Shihan is the instructor of the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, Japan.

HARVEY KONIGSBERG SHIHAN

7TH DAN SHIHAN

In the mid 1980s, Harvey Konigsberg Shihan established a studio in Woodstock, New York. Since then he has maintained a presence in Woodstock as an artist and as an Aikido instructor.

TONY SMIBERT SHIHAN

As President of the Australian Aikikai Federation, Tony Smibert Shihan will be visiting our dojo in June, 2013. Sensei Pennewaert first met Tony Smibert Shihan in 1990 when he travelled to Australia.

ROBERT BOTTERILL SHIHAN

Robert Botterill Shihan became one of Australia’s three Shihans in 2008 and was awarded the rank of 7th Dan in 2011 and is a member of the technical and teaching committee.

Hanan Yaniv Shihan from Australia Aikikai was welcomed as our guest sensei in 2010 at the Sugano Shihan Memorial Summer Camp in Santa Barbara. He was the otomo of Sugano Sensei.

Chief instructor Peter Bernath is a Shichidan (7th degree black belt) and Shihan (master teacher) awarded by Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba, and a member of the Technical Committee of the USAF.

Sensei Donovan Waite is the Chief Instructor of Old City Aikido, Philadelphia, PA and is one of Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan top students. His powerful, precise and yet nimble techniques are truly unique.

Jikou Sugano is the invited guest sensei for the 8th Annual Sugano Shihan Summer Camp. We are delighted to have him join us this year to commemorate his father’s legacy – Sugano Seichii Shihan.
