In Japan, one such tradition that encapsulates the spirit of renewal is Kagami Biraki, a ceremonial event symbolizing good health and fortune for the year ahead. This year, Newport Beach Aikikai Shin Do Kan Dojo is proud to invite you to a special Kagami Biraki event featuring a captivating demonstration by Sensei Gentil Pennewaert.
Kagami Biraki, which translates to “opening the mirror,” is a time-honored Japanese ritual held in January to break and share an ornamental mochi, a rice cake traditionally associated with good luck. This symbolic act is believed to bring harmony, prosperity, and positive energy into the New Year. It is a moment for reflection, gratitude, and communal celebration.
On Saturday, January 13, 2024 – Sensei Gentil Pennewaert, Shihan 7th Dan Aikikai , will grace the Newport Beach Aikikai Shin Do Kan Dojo with his demonstration. The event promises to be a captivating showcase of skill and tradition, providing attendees with a unique opportunity to witness the artistry of Aikido and its cultural significance.
The festivities will kick off at 11 a.m., with Sensei Gentil Pennewaert’s demonstration taking center stage. To ensure optimal seating, we kindly ask guests to arrive 10-15 minutes early. As a gesture of unity and shared joy, a potluck will follow the demonstration, allowing attendees to contribute their favorite dishes or desserts to the communal feast. It’s a chance to connect, share, and savor the diverse flavors that make our community special.
In honor of this special event, all adult and children’s classes on that day will be canceled. We appreciate your understanding and encourage everyone to participate in this unique celebration.
